Severe storms are “likely” in the Wichita metropolitan area and southeast Kansas this afternoon and evening as a cold front slides south through the state, weather officials say.

The primary threats will be winds of up to 70 miles an hour, locally heavy rain and hail larger than an inch in diameter, according to the National Weather Service.

There is also a slight risk for tornadoes, according to the Storm Prediction Center, though better chances exist in most of Oklahoma and the southeastern corner of Kansas.

The weather service projects storms to impact the Wichita area and the Kansas Turnpike between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. today.
