Harvey County voters on Tuesday night overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to sell Camp Hawk in Newton.
County commissioners had considered selling the 40-acre park and using the money to enhance the other two parks in the county. But a group of Camp Hawk supporters stepped in, petitioning to let voters decide the park’s fate.
With all of the precincts reporting, voters turned down the proposal 77 percent to 23 percent. The vote count was 4,703 to 1,307.
The park includes roughly 40 acres with a 4-acre park and several other amenities. It is located at 1801 S.W. 36th in Newton. From Exit 28 on I-135, it is two miles west on 36th Street.
